Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia defeated Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., in her bid to lead House Democrats on the powerful Oversight Committee, marking a significant setback for progressives. Connolly, 74, won the vote 131 to 84 over the 35-year-old Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent member of the progressive “Squad.”
Following his victory, Connolly expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their trust and pledged to lead with a clear focus. “I thank my colleagues for their support and the confidence they’ve placed in me to lead House Democrats on the Oversight Committee,” he said in a statement. He also emphasized the importance of addressing critical issues affecting Americans, promising to remain “disciplined” and “laser-focused” on resolving pressing “kitchen table issues.”
Connolly also vowed to stand firm against Republican tactics, accusing them of leveraging “debunked conspiracy theories” and enabling “the worst abuses of the Trump Administration.” He characterized the upcoming term as “trench warfare” and committed to countering what he described as “Republican gaslighting.” He added, “Now is not the time to be timid. I promise the American people that our Committee Democrats will be a beacon of truth and prepared from day one.”
In his written statement, Connolly highlighted the need to protect democracy and preserve the progress made by House Democrats in recent years. “We will stand up for our democracy and for truth,” he declared, signaling a combative approach to Republican leadership in the committee.
Ocasio-Cortez’s loss underscores the ongoing challenges faced by progressives in securing leadership roles within the Democratic Party. Despite her strong backing from the progressive wing, Connolly’s victory signals a preference among House Democrats for an experienced leader to counter Republican strategies.
While Connolly’s win may bolster Democratic leadership on the committee, questions remain about whether his approach will effectively navigate the challenges ahead.
