The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Trump administration’s waste-hunting task force led by Elon Musk and, just dropped a bombshell: a $2 billion grant from the Biden-era EPA went to a nonprofit with ties to Stacey Abrams and it’s raising some serious questions.
Power Forward Communities, a green energy outfit formed in late 2023, scored the massive payout in April 2024 as part of the EPA’s $20 billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. What makes this interesting is that the group reported just $100 in revenue in its first three months. That’s right $2 billion handed to an organization with a financial footprint smaller than your average food truck.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, tapped by Trump to clean house, flagged the grant on February 13, calling it “extremely concerning.” He’s not wrong: $2 billion is 20 million times Power Forward’s early revenue. The money, part of a broader Biden push for climate equity, was quietly “parked” at Citibank before the administration’s exit, dodging federal oversight a move DOGE is now scrambling to unravel.
So where does Stacey Abrams fit in? The Georgia Democrat isn’t directly on Power Forward’s payroll, but she’s senior counsel at Rewiring America, a key partner in the coalition, and founded two other linked groups, Southern Economic Advancement Project and Fair Count. Abrams has cheered the grant, touting its promise for “clean energy and equity.”
Online, the reaction’s been fierce. X users are split: some slam it as a “grift” or “ Abrams’ piggy bank,” while others argue it’s just messy policy, not a smoking gun yet. No evidence shows Abrams pocketed a dime, but the optics are rough.
Trump’s team wants the cash back, pronto. DOGE is digging deeper, and Zeldin’s vowing accountability. With $20 billion total in play, this could be the tip of the iceberg.
