On January 1, 2025, New Orleans was struck by a horrific attack when a man driving a rented Ford F-150 plowed into a crowd of New Year’s Eve revelers on Bourbon Street. The driver, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran, intentionally bypassed police barricades, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 35. After crashing the truck into an aerial work platform, Jabbar engaged in a shootout with police before being fatally shot.  

Authorities discovered an ISIS flag in the vehicle along with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), weapons, and ammunition. The FBI has since labeled this incident a terrorist attack. Yet, many major news outlets have avoided calling it that, opting instead to use vague terms like “tragic event” or “vehicular attack.”  

This raises a critical question: why is the media reluctant to label a premeditated act of violence with clear links to ISIS as terrorism? Such hesitation undermines the gravity of the incident and obscures its connection to a larger pattern of extremist violence.  

The attack has also sparked concerns that it may not be an isolated event. Hours following the tragedy, large crowds gathered in New York to hold protests in support of Islam. Anti-Israel and pro Iran demonstrators were present, and were heard chanting “intifada revolution”which translates to the uprising. Make no mistake, these are not just protests, this is support for terrorism. Should this not be considered a threat on American soil?

While freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy, these demonstrations have left many wondering whether they could embolden more acts of violence or create tension at a time when unity is desperately needed.  

As America mourns the victims of this heinous attack, it’s vital to address the real and present threat of terrorism, regardless of political sensitivities. Downplaying or mislabeling such incidents only hinders efforts to prevent further tragedies. By acknowledging the reality of extremist violence and taking proactive measures, America can honor the lives lost and work toward ensuring the safety of its citizens.
