Justice for Jocelyn Act: Protecting America’s Children and Demanding Accountability

Republican lawmakers are reintroducing a bill aimed at preventing tragedies like the murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. The “Justice for Jocelyn Act,” introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Troy Nehls, both Texas Republicans, seeks to ensure that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention beds are fully utilized before any illegal immigrants are released into the U.S. interior. This bill is strikingly similar to the recently passed Laken Riley Act, both of which focus on safeguarding American citizens especially children from preventable harm caused by illegal immigration. No member of Congress should oppose such measures without facing accountability.

The Justice for Jocelyn Act requires that every ICE detention bed be filled before migrants are released and mandates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) exhaust additional monitoring measures such as GPS ankle bracelets before allowing any releases. The bill was named in memory of Jocelyn Nungaray, who was tragically murdered by two illegal immigrants in Texas. Authorities confirmed the suspects were in the country illegally and had been released on recognizance orders while awaiting immigration hearings.

Senator Cruz criticized the current border policies, describing them as “reckless” and responsible for leaving detention center beds empty, enabling violent criminals to roam freely. “Congress should act with urgency to ensure no other American family has to endure what Jocelyn’s mother, Alexis Nungaray, has faced,” Cruz stated, adding that he is committed to ensuring justice for Jocelyn and safety for U.S. communities.

Rep. Nehls echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Jocelyn’s death was entirely preventable. “The Justice for Jocelyn Act would improve the detention and tracking of illegal aliens released into the United States and would put the safety of the American people first,” he said. Nehls urged Congress to act swiftly and send the legislation to the president’s desk.

This bill is part of a broader push to strengthen immigration enforcement. Recently, the House passed the Laken Riley Act, which requires the detention of illegal immigrants charged with theft-related crimes. As the Justice for Jocelyn Act aligns closely with this effort, it underscores the urgency of prioritizing America’s children and holding lawmakers accountable for opposing measures that protect citizens from preventable harm.
