On Tuesday, New York City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after he attempted to escort an undocumented immigrant out of immigration court. The incident took place at 26 Federal Plaza in New York, and was captured on video. According to his wife, Meg Barnette, Lander was approached by masked officers while standing outside a courtroom. He repeatedly asked them to produce a judicial warrant before he was handcuffed and taken into custody.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that Lander was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and obstructing a federal officer, although it’s unclear whether those are the official charges at this time. As of early Tuesday afternoon, he remained in custody and is being represented by a personal attorney as well as legal counsel from the city. During a press conference, his wife expressed concern, saying that while she is hopeful about her husband’s situation, many families facing immigration issues “can’t say that.”

Lander has been a vocal supporter of immigrants and has previously observed court proceedings at the same courthouse on at least two other occasions. His arrest sparked an immediate outcry from Democratic leaders in New York. Attorney General Letitia James condemned the incident, calling it “profoundly unacceptable” and an “abuse of power.” She accused federal authorities of escalating tensions and claimed the Trump administration was targeting New Yorkers in a way that made communities less safe.

The same behavior is being normalized in sanctuary cities like New York and states like California, where local leaders openly defy federal immigration policy and pledge to protect illegal immigrants. These cities refuse to cooperate with ICE and instead provide a haven for people who broke the law by entering the country illegally.
