House Speaker Mike Johnson: The United States supports Israel firmly.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., speaks at the March for Israel.
Organizers are expecting a turnout of up to 10,000 people for the “March for Israel” scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event is planned by a coalition of Jewish organizations to express solidarity with Israel following the October 7 terror attacks by Hamas.
Israel declared war on Hamas last month and has relentlessly bombarded the Gaza Strip, sending ground forces into Palestinian territory to destroy the terrorist group and free the remaining 238 hostages captured in the initial attack. According to Israeli and US officials, thousands of Palestinian civilians were killed in crossfire as Hamas placed military targets alongside civilian infrastructure such as schools, housing, and hospitals.
The primary objectives of the march include demonstrating American support for Israel, condemning antisemitism, and calling for the release of hostages held by Hamas. Authorities are actively engaged in ensuring the safety of the event, with the deployment of the National Guard as a precautionary measure. This event follows a pro-Palestinian demonstration that took place in Washington, D.C., on November 4
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C., is dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of both residents and visitors to the district. In response to potential security concerns related to the “March for Israel,” Mayor Muriel Bowser has taken proactive measures by deploying the National Guard to assist the police. This collaborative effort aims to maintain public order and uphold the First Amendment rights of individuals participating in the demonstration. The MPD, along with the support of the National Guard, is committed to facilitating a peaceful expression of views during the event while prioritizing the safety and security of the community.
